UK SRC Assistant Director Dr. Kelly Pennell Interviewed About PFAS in Drinking Water
Lexington, KY (February 13, 2020)- On February 6, 2020, UK SRC Assistant Director Dr. Kelly Pennell was interviewed about PFAS in drinking water by Eileen Street of Spectrum News 1 in Louisville, KY. The story, A Growing Conversation About PFAS Chemicals in Drinking Water, aired on Spectrum News 1 on Monday, February 10th. The segment includes interviews with Louisville Water Company and the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Dr. Pennell provides insight on the current research being done to investigate how contaminants like PFAS change and travel in the environment and the ultimate risk they pose for people. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) supports more than 40 research groups across the country working to better understand the health effects of PFAS. Several of these groups are affiliated with NIEHS’s Superfund Research Program. Researchers within UK’s Superfund Research Center are investigating ways to reduce toxicity of and mitigate exposure risks to persistent organic pollutants, including PFAS.
